Horse-Mocs Owner's Manual

Congratulations! You now own a set of Horse-Mocs, the finest in barefoot hoofware. Please take a moment to read this owner's manual to familiarize yourself with their use and care. Click here for an Adobe Acrobat version of these instructions.

Usage Notes

Horse-Mocs are not intended to be worn over metal shoes! The tracing of your horse's bare hoof was used to precisely fit that hoof's profile. Each Horse-Moc is labeled on the back to indicate its intended hoof. We kept the label small for the sake of appearance. Feel free to add your own markings.

The Velcro closure strip is not sewn to the Horse-Moc. This allows you maximum flexibility when you fit your Horse-Mocs. All of the non-rubberized surfaces are "Velcro Friendly".

Fitting Your Horse-Mocs

  1. Pick and clean your horse's hoof well before fitting the Horse-Moc.
  2. Have your horse raise its hoof.
  3. Insert your horse's toe into the front of the Horse-Moc first. (The front is split.)

  1. Hold the back of the Horse-Moc firmly by the lettering and let your horse lower its leg while stepping down into the Horse-Moc. At first, you may need to repeat this step to seat your horse's hoof straight and solid with the back and sides properly aligned. Like any new people shoe, they may be snug at first. Don't give up!

  1. Tuck the outside flap (closest to you) under the inside flap as deeply as you can. Hold it in place while completing step 6. Pull the other flap towards you and secure the Horse-Moc with the Velcro strip. A snug fit prevents twisting and shifting.
  2. Be sure that the Velcro strip extends from the rubberized part to the top of the boot. (You may cut the Velcro strip to the precise length for a custom fit.)
  3. Allow your horse to move around a little and readjust the closure if needed. The fit should be quite snug but take care not to cut off your horse's circulation.
  • The top of the Horse-Moc should be just under your horse's fetlock. If needed, you may cut the Neoprene top to customize the fit but be sure not to cut too low.
  • In the rare event your Horse-Moc twists out of position, you can form a pleat in the back of the Horse-Moc with an extra strip of Velcro. This is more likely to be needed if your horse's hoof is nearly round and is very smooth.

Removing your Horse-Mocs

  1. Remove the Velcro strip.
  2. Slide the Horse-Moc off by tugging on the heel.
  3. Inspect your Horse-Mocs when finished using them.

Safety Concerns

  • Let your horse get used to wearing Horse-Mocs under safe circumstances, just as you would do with shipping boots.
  • Observe your horse's comfort and acceptance of its brand new Horse-Mocs from the ground before attempting to ride. Simulate riding circumstances as closely as possible before mounting. If your horse has difficulty adjusting to its Horse-Mocs while you're on the ground, don't ride with them!
  • Horse-Moc soles are smooth when we ship them. You should hand-walk your horse on a coarse surface to roughen them up. This will improve traction.
  • Horse-Mocs are intended for moderate exercising, lungeing and riding on easy trails or arenas. They're not designed to withstand the punishment of endurance riding or extreme activities.

Maintenance

  • Keep your Horse-Mocs clean by hand-washing with mild detergent and allowing them to air dry. Never put your Horse-Mocs in the washer or dryer!
  • Small nicks and tears in the Neoprene tops may be repaired with a piece of Velcro placed on top of the tear.
  • If your horse "over-reaches" and damages the back of the Horse-Moc or causes the sole to separate from the Neoprene, the Horse-Moc is probably not repairable.

Medicinal Use

  • Horse-Mocs are fine for medicinal use but be sure to remove them each day to check your horse's hoof and skin. There shouldn't be much debris in the Horse-Moc but brush out any that may have gotten in through the top.
  • Your horse can be turned out in this boot. It's really very sturdy.
  • Horse-Mocs are not intended for continuous, 24-7 unattended wear.
