Horse-Mocs are the perfect alternative to traditional metal shoes. They are intended help your horse make a painless transition to barefoot living as well as for exercise and moderate riding. They can protect your horse's hooves from abrasive terrain and are perfect for short-term medicinal use.
Each Horse-Moc is individually hand made. The top part of a Horse-Moc is cut from smooth Neoprene rubber - the same used make wheelchairs for dogs. The inside of the boot is covered with smooth soft fleece fabric. The outside is completely covered with Velcro loop. The sole of the shoe is made of a special polymer rubber compound cast to the exact outline of your horses hoof. The rubber is ideal for healing tender feet. The tough compound gives durability on rough ground. On top of the sole is a layer of Kevlar coated Neoprene. This gives the hoof additional cushioning and resists wear from the inside. The lower part of the Horse-Moc is coated with an extremely tough polymer compound extend the life of the shoe and add protection to the front and sides of the hoof. The rear of the Horse-Moc is more lightly coated to allow for natural expansion and freedom.
Our Horse-Mocs are perfect if your hoof care specialist recommends pad therapy. The pad is already inside the boot. We can cut extra custom pads to fit inside the boot if you need extra thickness. The sole pad we use is coated with Kevlar and polyurethane for wear resistance. We can also provide pads for boots you might already own. We charge around $7.00 per pad depending on the size. If you send us a tracing, we'll do the cutting at no charge. If you prefer to cut your own, be advised that you'll need strong hands and sharp shears. This is no wimpy mouse pad!
At the present time, Horse-Mocs feature a smooth sole. A bit of riding on gravel will roughen the surface to a good degree. We don't recommend using Horse-Mocs in extremely slippery footing like wet muddy grass on a steep slope! We've tested other treaded boots in slippery footing and wouldn't recommend them either.
Horse-Mocs are the easiest alternative shoe to put on! Slip it on, pull it snug, and fasten the Velcro strip. That's it!
We can make Horse-Mocs in any size you need. Each one is individually hand-made to order. Irregularities in hoof size or shape pose absolutely no problem. To us, every hoof is unique.
Certainly! We've made Horse-Mocs for enormous draft horses and tiny miniature horses. (See our photo album.)
The fleece fabric lining is the same fabric used to cushion doggie wheelchairs. It won't chafe or rub unless it is worn for an extended time when dirty.
The elasticity of the Neoprene creates a secure friction fit that resists twisting. The custom shape of the sole keeps it in place.
Horse-Mocs are designed to stay put until you release the Velcro strip. Deep, sticky mud doesn't faze them. They stay on during lively horseplay. Use common sense in very slippery mud.
The light weight soft construction makes them ideal for trail packing. With an extra length of Velcro you can sling them over the pommel and have them easily available when you need them.
Our tester reports that Horse-Mocs have good traction and stay on well in creek crossings. Use common sense with slippery and mossy rocks and other unsure footing.
It depends. If your horse's hoof shape is stable, the longevity of the Horse-Moc will depend on the ground on which you ride, the vigor of your riding, and the number of hours you ride. I've successfully tested them on both my horses on crushed asphalt and gravel as they ran, bucked and reared. No shoe is indestructible - not even steel!
Horse-Mocs are priced from US$65.00 to US$85.00 per boot depending on the size. Please refer to our pricing guide page for the full information.
Each Horse-Moc is individually hand made from your tracing and requires several crafting steps. The polymer compounds we use take time to properly cure. Processing your Horse-Mocs takes one to two weeks. Allow up to 1 week for UPS ground delivery. We occasionally receive several orders simultaneously which results in a few days delay. If in doubt, call or write. Rush shipment is available at an extra charge.
We're working with our supplier for a source of colored Neoprene. At the present time, Horse-Mocs are only available in black. If you ride after dark, we'd suggest some reflective tape attached to some extra Velcro for greater visibility and safety.
If your feet were in pain, would you fax or email a tracing of your feet to your podiatrist? We'd really rather work from the original tracing. Facsimile machines usually distort things on both ends of the connection. Scanners and digital cameras can lose dimensional accuracy when translated from one graphics card to another or one operating system to another.
That being said, if your horse is in pain and time is of the essence, you could try it. We will need dimensional measurements of your image, preferably annotated on the image itself. We cannot guarantee the fit of a Horse-Moc made without an actual tracing. We'll need to speak on the phone.
We'd suggest hand washing your Horse- Mocs with a gentle soap and letting them air dry. Never put your Horse-Mocs in the dryer! See our Care and Feeding page for detailed instructions.
